Tips on Talking
to Your Legislator
- Write out what you want to say. This will help you stay focused and you
will be able to get your message across better.
- Know your facts. For example, if you are calling about a specific
bill, know the bill number and name.
- Introduce yourself. You need to give your name, address, and
telephone number. Also, if you part of a group or a registered voter, it is important to
say so.
- Explain your concerns. Talk about your situation or concerns.
Explain how the legislators decision will affect your life.
- Tell your legislator what you would like done. It is the
legislators responsibility to listen and to make decision based on their
constituencys concerns and needs.
Important:
- Listen carefully and take notes.
- Stay focused on your concern/issue.
- Follow up on your your conversation with a phone call or letter.
